A week ago I had the extreme privilege to attend the Wake Forest University Face to Face Speaker Forum in Winston Salem, NC, featuring former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, and former Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel. The two events held were a student only event at Wait Chapel on the Wake Forest Campus, and a key-note address at the LJVM Coliseum which featured a tribute to General Colin Powell. Both events focused on Albright's and Hagel's careers in government and foreign policy. They discussed current issues surrounding China, Russia, and Afghanistan as well as discussing past experiences in their respective careers. The event was originally intended to feature Madeleine Albright and Colin Powell, former Secretary of State. Colin Powell passed away October 18th, 2021. Albright and Hagel reflected on Powell's impactful life and career during both events. I was truly moved to hear how both of these individuals recognized how import the new generation is when it comes to moving forward politically. They both talked lots about how divided the nation has become and encouraged us, as the ones who will soon take over running the country, to try to understand the root of our issues and to hear out opinions that differ from our own. I am thrilled to write more about Madeleine Albright, Chuck Hagel, Colin Powell, this event, and all the things that I learned. I recently purchased Madeleine Albright's book titled "Fascism: a Warning," and I can't wait to share my thought about that soon!
I want leave you with my favorite quote from the event.
"Democracy is not a spectator sport" (Madeline Albright).
